چکیده

This paper describes a Tropical Pasture Simulator. This is a simple mechanistic model representing the growth of vegetative tropical pastures under rotational or continuous grazing with responses to N fertiliser, temperature and irradiance that can be used as a tool to study management options for the development of sustainable grazing systems. The model was derived as an adaptation of the `Hurley pasture models' which were originally designed to simulate the growth of ryegrass. The model incorporates the processes of light interception and photosynthesis, leaf area expansion; growth, ageing and senescence of plant tissues, recycling of substrates from senescing tissues, nitrogen uptake, mineralisation of soil organic N, N leaching and grazing. The paper discusses the main structure of the model, its components and the main adaptations required to simulate the growth of tropical pastures. The model was parameterised for kikuyu grass (Pennisetum clandestinum) growing in dairy systems in highland regions of Costa Rica. This paper also discusses the sensitivity of parameter values and the development of minimum parameter datasets for time and cost-e€ective implementation of the model. # 2000 Elsevier Science Ltd. Modelling the growth and utilisation of kikuyu grass (Pennisetum clandestinum) under grazing. 2. Model validation and analysis of management practices

This paper presents validation results and some management applications of a Tropical Pasture Simulator. The e€ects of di€erent environmental conditions, N fertilisation regimes and grazing intensities are analysed, and physiological concepts are used to aid in the interpretation of the responses obtained. The model demonstrates the importance of ̄exible management guidelines depending on envir...

Effect of Calcium Nutrition on the Formation of Calcium Oxalate in Kikuyu Grass

17-45 ABSTRACT The objective of this investigation was to study the formation of calcium oxalate crystals in situ in kikuyu grass (Pennisetum clandestinum) and to determine the effect of calcium uptake on the soluble and insoluble oxalate content of the grass. Oxalate crystals were more abundant in high-calcium leaves than in low-calcium leaves. Electron microscopy showed that the oxalate cryst...

A review of kikuyu grass (Pennisetum clandestinum) poisoning in cattle.

K ikuyu grass ( Pennisetum clandestinum ) is a perennial pasture species with a spring to autumn growth habit. Although it is usually grazed without ill effect, spasmodic incidents of poisoning in cattle 1 and, to a much lesser extent, sheep 2 and goats, 3 have been encountered. The aetiology and pathogenesis of kikuyu poisoning remains poorly understood. Outbreaks are characteristically acute ...

Effects of Kikuyu grass (Pennisetum clandestinum) age and different forage: concentrate ratios on methanogenesis Efecto de la edad del pasto kikuyo (Pennisetum clandestinum) y la relación forraje: concentrado sobre la metanogénesis

Objective. To evaluate the effect of Kikuyu grass (Pennisetum clandestinum) harvested at two different ages and three forage: concentrate supplement ratios (F/C) on methane (CH4) production, dry matter digestibility (DMD), and fermentation profile using the in vitro gas production technique. Materials and methods. six treatments, resulting from the combination of pasture age (30 or 60 days) and...

Kikuyu Grass: A Valuable Salt-Tolerant Fodder Grass

The turf grass Pennisetum clandestinum Hochst. (kikuyu grass) is one of the candidate plants for utilization and reclamation of salinized areas. The capability of kikuyu grass to grow under saline conditions was tested during 6 months, under various irrigation treatments (tap water control, 80-mM, 150-mM, 200-mM, 240mM NaCl). Plant biomass production was visibly affected only at NaCl concentrat...
